Korea Saemaul Undong Center (located in Seongnam-si, Korea) is holding the Workshop for Guatemalan delegation (head of delegation, Diputado Julio Cesar Lopez Villatoro) from May 24th to 25th, 2016 in order to share Korea’s successful rural development experiences in 1970’s, as well as to come up with the proper application methods for Saemaul Undong in Guatemala.
This program was designed to lay the foundations for implementing Saemaul Undong, establishing mutual-cooperative relationships between Korea and Guatemala.
“Saemaul Undong is a successful model as well as an efficient practical methodology for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the eradication of the poverty in the world. Therefore, we need to change our ordinary paradigm (vertical relations between donors and recipients) to a new one (horizontal relations), in which villagers could take the lead in doing Saemaul Undong, together with Korea”, remarked President So, Jin Kwang of Korea Saemaul Undong Center.
Head of the Delegation, Julio Cesar Lopez Villatoro mentioned that “the major objectives of the Guatemalan government is the implementation of Saemaul Undong in local government levels. In this regard, we would like to hear real voices from the mayors or provincial governors of the local governments in Korea. We really want to adopt the Saemaul Undong model to Guatemalan rural areas with Saemaul spirit : Deligence, Self-help, and Cooperation.”
In this workshop, various lectures on Saemaul Undong and discussion sessions will be provided to the delegation; the titles of the lectures are followings : Saemaul Undong in Korea, Principles and Application Methods of Saemaul Undong, Roles of the Government for SMU, and The Success Case of Saemaul Undong.
With this as a momentum, Korea Saemaul Undong Center is actively considering making a plan to share Korea’s success experience of Saemaul Undong with the Central and South American countries.
