Korea Saemaul Undong Center(President KWAK, Daehoon) carried out monitoring for 2022 Papua New Guinea and Fiji Global Saemaul Undong Model Village Projects from January 2nd to 13th, 2023.
First, the Papua New Guinea·Fiji monitoring team toured 4 pilot villages and 1 Self-help village in Papua New Guinea from January 2nd to 8th to evaluate the performance of Saemaul projects while visiting the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Papua New Guinea and the Governor of Goroka District to identify the current status of Saemaul Undong and request interest and cooperation in the implementation of Saemaul Projects.
Papua New Guinea is in its last year of Saemaul Undong Model Village Project this year, and Saemaul projects including Village Road Construction, Resource Center, Housing project, Chicken, Piggery, Bee Keeping, and Bakery were conducted. As the Saemaul Undong Model Village Project is ended in 2022, the monitoring team requested continued interest and efforts from local residents and leaders so that a sustainable Saemaul Undong could be carried out in Papua New Guinea even after the Project was closed.
The monitoring team flew to Fiji right after from Papua New Guinea and conducted monitoring from January 9th to the 13th, 2023. They visited 3 pilot villages and met the authorities such as the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Fiji, the Minister of Ministry of Maritime Development and Disaster Management, and Roko Tui of i Taukei Local government in Tailebu District to identify the current status of the Saemaul Undong in Fiji and request interest and cooperation in the implementation of the Saemaul Project.
* i Taukei is a local government organization representing the indigenous community of Fiji, and Roko Tui is the head of i Taukei as well as the representative of the local indigenous people.
The three pilot villages in Fiji this year conducted village road project, community center, waste process, bridge, fence project, and water project as environmental improvement projects.
Fiji was selected for Global Saemaul Undong Model Village Project in 2020 and will promote the Project for 5 years until 2024.
